About Larry Avallone

Law Enforcement

As an Assistant State Attorney, I prosecuted serious felony cases and conducted numerous jury trials involving violent crimes, drug trafficking, career criminal offenders, and other major offenses. My years as a prosecutor strengthened my belief that justice requires fairness, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.

After eight years as a prosecutor, I opened his own law firm in New Smyrna Beach, fulfilling a longtime goal of building my own business and serving the community from a different perspective within the legal system. During my seven years in private practice, I handled criminal defense and family law matters while gaining firsthand insight into the challenges faced by families, individuals, and small business owners.

In 2016, I earned my Board Certification in Criminal Trial Law from The Florida Bar — one of the highest levels of recognition for competency and professionalism in the legal field. The designation is awarded only to attorneys who demonstrate substantial trial experience, rigorous testing, peer review, and exceptional ethics and professionalism.

I later returned to public service as the Chief Assistant Public Defender for the Seventh Judicial Circuit, where I continues to serve today. In that role, I help oversee approximately 75 attorneys and 125 total employees circuit-wide while continuing to mentor attorneys, develop training programs, and handle serious trial cases.

In addition to my courtroom experience, I serves as an Adjunct Instructor teaching criminal law and criminal justice courses. I have also served on the Florida Supreme Court Committee on Standard Jury Instructions in Criminal Cases and the Florida Bar Criminal Trial Law Certification Committee.

I have called Volusia County home since 1982, when my family moved to New Smyrna Beach. Raised alongside my three brothers in a hardworking family, I learned early the values of discipline, responsibility, and public service.

I attended public schools in New Smyrna Beach and decided at just sixteen years old that I wanted to pursue a career in law enforcement. After high school, I attended the police academy and began what would become a nearly ten-year career as a Volusia County Deputy Sheriff.

During my years in law enforcement, I served in road patrol, as a school resource deputy, and later as a courtroom bailiff. It was during his time working inside the courtroom that I developed a deep respect for the legal system and realized he wanted to become a lawyer.

While working full-time as a deputy sheriff, I continued my education, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Warner University and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida.

These experiences have given me a balanced understanding of the justice system and the people it serves. I believe judges must apply the law fairly and impartially, treat every person with dignity and respect, and decide every case based solely on the law and the facts.

I am running for Circuit Court Judge because I believes our community deserves a judge with experience, integrity, professionalism, and a lifelong commitment to public service.

I, along with my wife, are raising their three children in the same community we proudly call home. For more than four decades, I have lived, worked, and served in this community and I remain committed to protecting the integrity and fairness of its courts.

My Philosophy has very much been shaped by my experiences.

Experience

Larry's background in law enforcement , as an Assistant State Attorney, and defense attorney gives him a unique understanding of the law and the people it impacts.

This experience on all sides of the courtroom has provided me with a balanced, practical perspective—one grounded not only in the law, but in real-world application of justice.

I believe that a judge must apply the law fairly and impartially, treat every individual with dignity, and ensure that every case is decided based on the facts and the law—nothing more, nothing less.

I am running for Circuit Court Judge to continue my commitment to justice, integrity, and public service in the community that he has called home since 1982.
